Looking Ahead to Another Campaign: 2018 Olympics

Several US cities are conducting feasibility studies to host the 2018 Winter Olympics: Lake Placid in New York; Salt Lake City, Utah; the Lake Tahoe region around Reno, Nevada; and Denver, which would include ski areas such as Steamboat, Vail and Aspen. The U.S. Olympic Committee had recently announced Denver as its eighth “Community Partner City,” an important step in the selection of an Olympic host city. With the assistance of the Colorado Springs-based USOC, Denver hopes to bid for future sports world championships ranging from figure skating to gymnastics and to land the 2009 Sport Accord, a major annual meeting of International Olympic Committee members.

The Metro Denver Sports Commission, led by Rob Cohen, a Denver businessman and new chairman of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce, is spearheading the Olympic effort.

Denver had been chosen to host the 1976 Olympics, but voters in 1972 supported a statewide referendum prohibiting the expenditure of public funds to host the Olympic Games, which killed the bid offer. Denver is the only city to be selected to host the Olympics and then turn it down for financial and environmental reasons.
