Dead Dog Buttons, Slimy Photo-bioreactors and Bullets for Beauprez

Judge: Kill Them All

A Garfield County Court judge wants all pit bulls dead. “If I had a big red button right here that would kill all the pit bulls, I wouldn’t hesitate to press it,” Judge Jason Jovanovich said during his sentencing of the owner of a pit bull that attacked a woman in Silt. The judge also declared, “I think they should be as illegal as owning a lion and they belong in zoos.” Then he really let loose: “These dogs are like sharks, and I think they’re as dangerous as a loaded gun on a mantle.”The owner of the pit bull will have to pay restitution to the victim and will serve a year of unsupervised probation. The dog was euthanized.

Fill’er Up with Green Goo

From a Colorado State press release: Solix Biofuels Inc., a startup company based in Boulder, is working with Colorado State University engineers to commercialize a technology that can cheaply mass produce oil derived from algae and turn it into biodiesel fuel. Solix officials estimate that widespread construction of its photo-bioreactor system could meet the demand for the U.S. consumption of diesel fuel – about 4 million barrels a day – by growing algae on less than 0.5 percent of the U.S. land area, which is otherwise unused land adjacent to power plants and ethanol plants.

Ritter Hooked Fishermen, Beauprez Gunned Down Hunters

The results of the post-election poll of Western Slope voters by Colorado Conservation Voters revealed Governor-elect Bill Ritter led by a 25-point margin over Bob Beauprez on water issues. The poll also indicated that sportsmen across the state were 52 percent to 37 percent in favor of Ritter. Only hunters showed a preference for Beauprez over Ritter by an eight-point margin (apparently they, too, believed that elk can be trained.) Fishermen, on the other hand, favored Ritter by an eight-point margin.
