VIDEO: Obama leading Romney, Santorum in purple states

Polling released this week by the bipartisan polling and consulting group, Purple Strategies, shows President Obama leading both Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum in 12 key battleground states, including Colorado.

In the 12 states combined, Obama leads Romney 47-43 and Santorum 46-44. The polling data is not broken down by individual states, but lumps Colorado in with Nevada and New Mexico and shows Obama over Romney 47-44, but trailing Santorum 47-46 in those states.

When rated by approval/disapproval numbers, however, Obama appears much stronger with a 46 percent approval rating compared with a 48 percent disapproval rating. Romney’s numbers come in 27 percent approval against 57 percent who disapprove of the former Massachusetts governor. Santorum does a little better at 33/49.

“In 2012, a dozen states will decide whether President Obama is elected to a second term. The PurplePoll focuses exclusively on the Purple Electorate – likely voters only in these swing states,” says the Purple Strategies website.

Here watch Purple Strategies Democratic strategist Steve McMahon and Republican strategist Todd Harris talk about the poll and the current state of the race on MSNBC’s Hardball:
