Republican lawmakers in Denver: The sex tape

This week Colorado Republicans again joined red-state lawmakers around the country who in recent years have worked to pass hard-line anti-abortion bills that aim to defund and close down clinics, force women to undergo unnecessary and invasive procedures, narrow the window of weeks during which they can get abortions and restrict the contraception they can use, et cetera. Representative Stephen Humphrey, a Republican from Severance, introduced a bill that would grant fertilized human eggs legal rights. The bill would outlaw abortion, even in cases of rape and incest, as well as emergency contraception. It would make performing an abortion a Class 3 felony.

But Colorado is no red state. It hasn’t been for years. The bill has no chance of passing in the Democratic-controlled General Assembly. Yet it drew 19 co-sponsors. The same bill was introduced last year and failed to pass.

“The annual abortion sideshow has begun in the Colorado General Assembly,” wrote the House Democrats communication team in a release.

“Colorado Republicans push extreme positions that disrespect the women of our state and trample on their freedoms,” Majority Leader Dickey Lee Hullinghorst, a Boulder Democrat, is quoted to say. “And then those same Republicans wonder why they lose elections.”

Humphrey’s bill has breathed new life into a cut-up and remixed compilation video of Colorado Republican lawmakers talking sex at the capitol last year.

“Think about this kinda long and hard…” “What are we afraid of?!”
