Suspect in 15th and Wynkoop shooting dead from self-inflicted gunshot wounds

Denver Police have reported that the suspected gunman in a shooting at 15th and Wynkoop, in downtown Denver, was pronounced dead at the scene from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

The only known victim, a female, is in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds. She has been transported to Denver Health Medical Center.

Police responded to the shooting Tuesday afternoon at the Alliance Center building, 1536 Wynkoop Street. There remains a heavy police presence on the scene, which has been secured but is not clear, the Denver Police reports.

Unconfirmed reports say that the victim was targeted for personal reasons.

The shots reportedly came from within the building on the second floor.

John Powers, a board member for the Alliance for Sustainable Colorado, the nonprofit that owns the building, said all of that organization’s staff are safe.

Pete Maysmith, executive director of Conservation Colorado, whose offices are in the building, said at 3:30 that his staff is safe, too.

“I’m ok. We’re ok. We’re all ok,” he told The Independent.

Early reports indicate that staff from Western Conservation Foundation, Walk Denver, Trout Unlimited, Healthier Colorado, Brendle Group and Common Cause are all safe and accounted for, as well.

The second floor is reportedly home to offices for the American Council for the Blind, Community Shares of Colorado and The Sierra Club.

The Alliance Center is a hub for several progressive groups in Denver. Tuesday’s shooting comes on the same day as a visit from Hillary Clinton to a downtown Denver co-working space. The day has also seen increased police presence on the nearby 16th Street Mall after an office worker was recently stabbed.

Friends and family of those who work in the building have taken to social media to call for stricter gun control.
