The Home Front: Did a grant for distressed Colorado coal communities go to the right place?

A Western Slope lawmaker is questioning whether a $650,000 federal grant, which went to Gunnison to help communities recover from lost coal jobs is going to the right place. “I couldn’t believe that somebody is so out of touch that they don’t know where the workforce resides,” GOP Rep. Don Coram, R-Montrose told The Grand Junction Daily Sentinel. “Coram was referring to the quirk of political line-drawing geography that left the coal in the North Fork of the Gunnison in Gunnison County and the miners who worked them in Delta County.”

The Aspen Skiing Co. has added a staff person to deal with the issue of affordable housing, reports The Aspen Times. “Jeffreys’ first task is taking inventory of Skico’s stock of affordable housing as well as the available units in the community. Next, he will look at the potential Skico has for building projects on its own properties as well as in partnership with other parties, according to Laing. Some landowners have approached the company with the offer to team up on projects, he said.”

  1. That has always been a bone of contention between Delta County and Gunnison County…we, the North Fork Vally, got all the dirty stuff, and Gunnison got all the Tax money…yep, Gunnison county fought hard to keep it that way as well…
