Perlmutter barely edging Romanoff in Senate support on Facebook

Rep. Ed Perlmutter is winning the race to fill the Senate vacancy opened by Sen. Ken Salazar’s move to secretary of Interior, at least on the social-networking site Facebook. A group supporting Perlmutter — When I say Senator, you say PERLMUTTER! — counts 186 members at noon Monday, slightly ahead of another group backing outgoing House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, ** Andrew Romanoff ** for Senate 08, which had 181 members at the same time.

Only three other contenders for the Senate appointment have Facebook groups devoted to their nominations. John W. Hickenlooper for U.S. Senate has 32 members supporting the Denver mayor, and Joan Fitz-Gerald for US Senate includes nine devotees of the former president of the Senate. Mike Miles for US Senate, the group backing the Colorado Springs educator, who lost a primary to Salazar in 2004, has a single member, who created the group Saturday.

None of the Facebook groups appear to be affiliated with the Senate hopefuls but were started by fans of the politicians, including some from out of state.

Ritter has said he plans to name Salazar’s replacement “quickly,” and is taking public comment at ussenate.comments@state.co.us.

UPDATE: As of Monday evening, Romanoff’s Facebook group had taken the lead with the most members. Here are the totals at 7:30 p.m.:

Romanoff — 203
Perlmutter — 190
Hickenlooper — 33
Fitz-Gerald — 9
Miles — 1

FURTHER UPDATE: Romanoff is on a roll, at least as far as his Facebook support group is concerned. As of Tuesday morning, members are flocking to his group in droves. And Miles supporters — at least a handful — seem to have discovered his group exists. Here’s the latest ranking, counted at 10:00 a.m.:

Romanoff — 230
Perlmutter — 197
Hickenlooper — 37
Fitz-Gerald — 9
Miles — 7
