Sen. Wayne Allard admonished his colleagues in a press release for engaging in what he termed “a cheap political stunt” to advance a no-confidence vote on embattled U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.
Urging the Senate to “get back to the serious issues the American people sent us to Washington to address,” Allard’s own legislative priorities have been skimpy and a bit questionable on the significance meter. On April 18, Colorado’s senior senator introduced a resolution and sent a letter to Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice demanding the return of the U.S.S. Pueblo which was seized by North Korea in 1968 during the Vietnam War. Allard proposed trading the ship with nuclear club wannabe and tyrant Kim Jong-Il for a 19th century North Korean flag that was captured in battle by U.S. Marines and is on display at the U.S. Naval Academy.
A week earlier, the Senator-veterinarian “celebrated” the passage of a bill to prohibit animal fighting. Repulsive as it may be, dogfighting is already illegal in all 50 states and cockfighting is only allowed in the state of Louisiana questioning the need for a federal law. Allard likened animal blood sports as a gateway to “other criminal acts, such as gambling, illegal drug activity and other undefined illicit behavior.”
A year ago, Sen. Allard co-sponsored a Constitutional amendment to protect the American flag from desecration and “interference from the courts.” The bill went down in flames.
