Denver News Agency whacks 200 jobs from business unit
The fallout from the Feb. 28 closing of the Rocky Mountain News continues with a Friday afternoon “memory hole” announcement by the Denver News Agency that it will layoff 200 people over the coming weeks.
The job cuts represent more than 17 percent of the DNA workforce payroll, according to an AP story appearing at Forbes.com.
After $20 million in wage and benefit concessions by the unions the DNA braced for expected job cuts in the shared business operations unit formed as part of the joint-operating agreement between the Denver Post and Rocky Mountain News.
DNA President and CEO Gerald Grilly told AP that the layoffs affect all departments but not the Denver Post newsroom which recently let go six managers last month.
Grilly said the cost cuts will help shape a new business model and allow the agency to adapt. ‘We’re not just ink on paper anymore. We are true information providers across many platforms. The new shape of our industry demands that we work leaner and smarter to serve our customers,” he said.
DNA will employ 850 full-time employees once the most recent layoffs of union and non-union positions is complete.
