Mitt Romney’s love affair with many of Colorado’s mightiest elephants continues, as evidenced by today’s announcement of his “Statewide Finance Committee” who will help him “raise the resources necessary to be competitive in the state and across the nation.”
The list represents is a veritable who’s who of high-profile Republican movers and shakers – all of whom will be dialing for Romney dollars. Just for starters there’s Attorney General John W. Suthers and retiring U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard and retired Gov. Bill Owens. All of them have the title “Honorary Finance Chair” for Romney’s Colorado money operation.

“I speak for the entire Colorado Statewide Finance Committee when I say that we are proud to join Governor Romney’s team,” said Former Gov. Owens in a press release issued by the Romney campaign. “He is a strong leader with a record of accomplishment both in the public and private sector. We believe the Governor is the only candidate in this race who can change Washington and bring back conservative, common sense principles.”
Romney, the personally richest candidate running for the presidency, has also proven to be quite effective at raising cash. In the 2nd Quarter, he raised $21 million – more than any other Republican.
After the 2nd Quarter filing, the group Open Secrets, reported that the combined contributions off all the candidates running was more than $265 million.
No presidential money chase has ever started so quickly,” noted Open Secrets, which is a project of the Center for Responsive Politics, a Washington, D.C-based organization that tracks money in politics.
“By some predictions, the eventual nominees will need to raise $500 million apiece to compete — a record sum.”
The next campaign finance reports are due to the Federal Election Commission by October 15, covering July through September.
