How does one coordinate security for more than 35,000 delegates, volunteers, political dignitaries and media, let alone the residents of the Denver area for the Democratic National Convention? Two cops are going to find out.
Two longtime members of the Denver Police Department, Frank Conner and Jim Malone, will lead the Democratic National Convention Committee (DNCC) security team for the Democratic Convention, set for Aug. 25-28 in Denver, the DNCC announced.
A 35-year veteran of the Denver Police Department and the security manager for the 2006 National Basketball Association All Star Game and the 1997 Summit of the Eight, Conner will serve as director of security. His responsibilities include coordinating the DNCC’s overall security needs with the U.S. Secret Service and the Denver Police Department and developing a safety and security plan for DNCC staff and volunteers during convention week.
His duties will also include working with the convention’s hall management, transportation and media teams to develop a site plan for the Pepsi Center, including a plan for pre- and post-convention security requirements, according to the DNCC.
“I look forward to joining the Convention team and to working with the Denver Police Department, among other law enforcement agencies, to make this Convention a safe and enjoyable experience for all of our Convention guests and the citizens of Denver,” said Conner in a press release.
With more than 30 years of service with the Denver Police Department under his belt, Malone will serve as deputy director of security for the DNCC. Malone’s responsibilities include planning for the security of the DNCC’s staff, offices and events during the lead-up to the 2008 Convention. The DNCC noted that Malone will also work with the convention’s transportation and housing departments, in conjunction with local law enforcement, to develop a security plan for the DNCC’s official hotels and shuttle system.
Malone has provided protection for Denver Mayors John Hickenlooper and Wellington Webb under the Mayor’s Executive Security Unit.
“We are extremely fortunate to have Frank and Jim joining our team,” said Leah D. Daughtry, CEO of the DNCC. “With long-standing relationships with the Denver Police Department and nearly 70 years of law enforcement service between them, these professionals will be ideal liaisons between the DNCC, the City of Denver and our security partners at the federal level.”
