Science Sunday: More Harm Than Good From Biofuels?
Separate reports question the carbon reduction and environmental benefits of popular new renewable fuels.Biofuels, recently the darling of farmers and technogeeks alike, have taken quite a beating this week. While the Environmental Protection Agency proudly announced it was raising the required level of non-petroleum vehicle fuel to 7.76 percent, separate research from the Swiss government and the Nature Conservancy says, “Hold on there a second,” these fuels aren’t really so good for the environment.
A study produced by the Swiss government published last week assessed the effects of gasoline, diesel, and natural gas and 26 varieties of biofuels using two criteria: greenhouse gas emissions and overall environmental impact. According to a “Perspectives” paper in the journal Science by J
