Denver high school principal blocked on abstinence-only sex ed

Through the intervention of Denver Public School officials, the Bush-era faith-based plans of Jorge Loera, first-year principal at West High School, have been thwarted. Students will continue to receive sex education that includes information on contraception. Loera intended to end that comprehensive program and to replace it with abstinence-only sex ed.

National reproductive health organization and service provider Planned Parenthood, in partnership with the Denver School district, has run the education program in the past. Loera reportedly sent the organization a letter in July saying he had a new plan.

Loera sent an e-mail to Planned Parenthood saying the school has ‘decided to work with another organization around preventing sexual activity among teenagers. I like this program because it is faith-based and its priority is promoting abstinence until marriage.’

On Monday Denver Public Schools officials said that there would be no change in the program at West High.

Loera told officials Monday that even though he doesn’t agree with teaching contraception, “he will continue the partnership the school has had with Planned Parenthood.”
