U.S. Chamber of Commerce to stop global warming by frivolously suing it!
U.S. Senator John McCain, R-Ariz., one-time nominal GOP leader and no tree-hugger by anyone’s measure, came to Colorado this week and proclaimed that he believed in the scientific and practical evidence of climate change. His proclamation amounted to acknowledgment that human addiction to fossil fuels was the cause.
Elsewhere, on the same day, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce announced it was planning to put global warming research on trial in what it revealingly referred to as “the Scopes monkey trial of the 21st century.” Never mind that the 1925 Scopes Trial concerning Darwin’s theory of evolution is now shorthand for the losing battle waged, sometimes spectacularly, in the U.S. against science. Oops.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, trying to ward off potentially sweeping federal emissions regulations, is pushing the Environmental Protection Agency to hold a rare public hearing on the scientific evidence for man-made climate change.
Chamber officials say it would be “the Scopes monkey trial of the 21st century” — complete with witnesses, cross-examinations and a judge who would rule, essentially, on whether humans are warming the planet to dangerous effect.
“It would be evolution versus creationism,” said William Kovacs, the chamber’s senior vice president for environment, technology and regulatory affairs. “It would be the science of climate change on trial.”
The goal of the chamber, which represents 3 million large and small businesses, is to fend off potential emissions regulations by undercutting the scientific consensus over climate change. If the EPA denies the request, as expected, the chamber plans to take the fight to federal court.
In other words, climate change is a “job killer.” Any conservative judge will see the light of reason and simply nullify it, the way we did Evolution back in the day. This will not be a mere diversion show trial. Mega energy corporations can be counted on to assist by dedicating millions of dollars to organize employees to protest climate change by shouting that scientists should “get their Nazi hands off my climate!”
Featured Colorado speaker will be state Sen. Greg Brophy, R-Wray, avid cyclist and one of our own “anthropogenic global warming” deniers.
