Ritter and Obama to lead service initiative; no, we’re not talking about Bill and Barack

Michelle Obama and Gov. Bill Ritter’s wife Jeannie Ritter announced Wednesday a joint effort to make service to community a “hallmark of the 2008 Democratic National Convention.”

In a press release sent to media by the Democratic National Convention Committee, which is organizing the big shindig in Denver next month, organizers said Obama and Ritter will co-chair the DNC Delegate Service Day on Aug. 27.

The service day, which will take place one day before Barack Obama gives his acceptance speech at Invesco Field, has been a major focus of the DNCC.

Last month, Gov. Ritter joined Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius in Denver to roll out a statewide “Convention Captain” program that would in part organize community service events in each Colorado county to take place at the same time DNC delegates are giving back to the Denver metro area.
