Of Bush, Siegelman and fired bloggers

Remember when the Bush administration allegedly used U.S. attorneys to take down former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman, a Democrat?

Roger Shuler — a high-profile blogger and leading critic of Alabama’s judicial system – does.

Despite Siegelman’s being convicted of multiple bribery charges, questions still remained about how politically motivated the investigations into his criminal activities were.

Siegelman was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2006 but was released in March of this year after an appeals court overturned a lower court’s ruling that he serve in prison while his appeal was heard.

Shuler, who reported on the issue in length on his blog, said his coverage of the debacle is responsible for his firing from the University of Alabama publication office last month.

“Getting elected and running for office as a Democrat in Alabama cost former Governor Don Siegelman his freedom. Writing about the Siegelman story has cost me my job,” Shuler said in his blog
