State Treasurer Kennedy squelches rumors of run by endorsing Hickenlooper

Cary Kennedy, Colorado’s popular treasurer, quashed rumors she was considering running for lieutenant governor on a ticket topped by U.S. Senate candidate and former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff. She sent out a press release an hour ago endorsing Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper’s candidacy.

Excitement about a possible Romanoff run faded in the wake of Hickenlooper announcing his candidacy this week. Romanoff’s primary campaign to unseat U.S. Sen. Michael Bennet has been notable mostly for the surprising way it has limped along and failed to impress. In a meeting held Monday, Romanoff allegedly urged Hickenlooper not to run for governor in order to make way for a Romanoff-Kennedy ticket.

Kennedy reportedly felt out a run for governor herself with state Democratic Party leader Pat Waak last week.

Hickenlooper announced his candidacy Tuesday. Kennedy sent her release endorsing Hickenlooper Wednesday afternoon:

When Governor Ritter decided against running for reelection, my number one concern was how we could replace his leadership, experience and passion.

Yesterday, that answer came in the form of John Hickenlooper.

John not only brings considerable business experience to this race, he has demonstrated an extraordinary ability to attract new businesses and bring innovative companies and high-paying jobs to our state. This is exactly the type of leader we need today in Colorado. John Hickenlooper will open the doors of entrepreneurism throughout our state by attracting new investments to forward-thinking businesses and communities.

I look forward to serving with John Hickenlooper as a partner and working to solve Colorado’s most pressing challenges.
