Fox News Poll: Obama would still trounce rivals. Damn!

Fox News commissioned a poll last week to test voters feelings about the President and members of Congress. The national telephone poll was conducted for Fox by Opinion Dynamics Corp., which called 900 registered voters. Pres. Obama, surprisingly, still creamed hypothetical opponents– top GOP opponents and theoretical Tea Party opponents. More than that, Obama still wins handily among independents, as Dave Weigel reports at the Washington Independent.

Fox didn’t present the information that way. It started off with the abstract questions.

Lead paragraph:

As views remain sharply divided about Congress, Americans say — by a 47-43 percent margin — they would vote for someone else rather than re-elect President Obama if the 2012 presidential elections were held today.

It trotted out the more dramatic specifics in the last three paragraphs of the piece:

President Barack Obama (WDCpix)

Disappointing everyone and Bruised but ahead in polls

In hypothetical head-to-head matchups, President Obama tops each of the Republican candidates tested.

By 47 percent to 35 percent Obama bests former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. The president has an even wider edge over former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin (55 percent to 31 percent), and former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich (53 percent to 29 percent).

Finally, twice as many people say they would vote for Obama (48 percent) as would back a candidate from the Tea Party movement (23 percent).

Fox politics reporters cover the organization’s own commissioned polls the way Denver Post business reporters cover their own parent company’s struggles to stay solvent.
