VIDEO: Badly timed pro-Buck ‘cesspool’ ad may deliver reverse message

Weld County D.A. Ken Buck has taken a hit this week in his campaign for U.S. Senate. Accusations of corruption gained traction when a Denver Post story Thursday aired the dark and messy details surrounding Buck’s exit a decade ago from the U.S. Attorney’s office. Now comes an ad from an outside controversial group touting Buck as the man to clean up the “cesspool” that is Washington. It’s a good message badly timed and delivered by the wrong messenger.

In interviews with the Post for Thursday’s story, Buck admitted to mistakes in essentially aiding the defense in a case that involved a shady GOP-connected pawnshop owner who sold handguns used in a string of crimes for which he got a slap on the wrist from the state in a convoluted and politicized case. The man, Greg Golyansky, recently donated to Buck’s campaign.

The new Buck ad is paid for by Americans For Job Security, an organization campaign finance watchers have called a “sham front group that would be better called Corporations Influencing Elections … and that masquerades as a non-profit to conceal its funders and the scope of its electioneering activities.” Buck has taken heat for the spending this non-transparent group is doing on his behalf.

The ad calls Washington a “cesspool” and says Buck is the man to clean it up. The word “cesspool” is powerful and is meant to make an impression and it may now be negatively connected to Buck till Election Day.
