Clinton cash not following Obama

Hillary Clinton and many of her supporters are throwing their weight behind Sen. Barack Obama Tuesday in Denver, but most of Clinton’s financial backers haven’t come into the presidential nominee’s fold, according to the New York Times.

After Clinton dropped out of the race in early June, it appears her supporters preferred to sit on their hands — and their wallets — instead of writing checks to the Obama campaign, which opted to forgo public financing and instead set a private fund raising goal of $300 million.

Indeed, a New York Times analysis of Federal Election Committee [sic] records found that Clinton donors contributed roughly $2 million to the Obama campaign in July, a similar amount to what they gave in June.

The amount is not insubstantial, but it appears to fall short of targets originally envisioned by Obama fund-raisers.
