Former Colorado House Speaker Andrew Romanoff has pulled even with Sen. Michael Bennet (D) for the first time, according to a Denver Post/9 News poll released Sunday. Romanoff edges Bennet 48-45 percent, but the result was well within the margin of error of +/- 4.3 percent.
Romanoff has never been close in the few polls conducted on the Democratic primary — polls in May and June showed him 15 and 17 points down, respectively. Romanoff also recently sold his house for cash and liquidated some of his assets, netting him about $225,000 in total that he will use all for media buys. Romanoff said the poll indicated “Romentum” in the race.
The campaign of Sen. Bennet, who is still far from being counted out, dismissed the poll. A poll conducted for the campaign and an accompanying strategy memo (PDF) to the campaign said that Bennet still had a 41-37 percent lead among voters who had already cast their ballot by mail, which the strategy firm said was about a quarter of voters. Bennet also reportedly injected $300,000 of his own money into his campaign.
Despite his recent gaffes, Ken Buck still held a 50-41 percent lead over former Lieutenant Governor Jane Norton in the Republican primary for U.S. Senate.
In the gubernatorial race, the polls shows Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper (D) with approximately a 20-point lead over either Republican candidate, Dan Maes or former Rep. Scott McInnis.
