Colin Powell says GOP moving too far to the right — needs to support immigration rights

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell Sunday said the Republican Party needs to support policies that would enable illegal Mexican immigrants to achieve legal status in the United States.

He made his comments on NBC’s Meet the Press.

“They are doing things we need done in this country,” Powell said.

He was critical of the Tea Party and of the rightward movement of the Republican Party in recent years.

Powell was secretary of state under George W. Bush. He was also the nation’s top military officer under President Clinton and the first President Bush.

Immigration is already a big issue in the Colorado governor’s race and is likely to become even bigger as the candidacy of American Constitution Party nominee Tom Tancredo gains steam.
