Spreading Wealth Around, Part V

Today’s snapshot of donors to Trailhead LLC Group and two other 527s under investigation by Colorado Confidential brings us some tidbits about Bruce Benson, one of the founders of Trailhead. Benson’s company, Benson Mineral Group,  has contributed $75,000 to Trailhead.

Benson has earned his campaign contributing stripes and then some. In 2004, he was a “ranger” for President George W. Bush, agreeing to raise at least $200,000 for the campaign.  The company also contributed $100,000 to the 2004 Bush inaugural committee. Perhaps he was grateful for his 2003 appointment to the National Park Foundation Board.

Benson ran the Colorado Republican party from 1987 to 1991, and lost a bid for governor in 1994 after spending $3.4 million of his own cash. Benson led the CO GOP party again in 2002 and 2003. He’s poured millions of dollars into GOP causes.
