Site sews up Schaffer connections to Abramoff

As reported by the Rocky Mountain News today, ProgressNow Action unveiled a new website within minutes of Jack Abramoff’s sentencing that shows clear links between the disgraced lobbyist and Colorado Senate candidate Bob Schaffer. The site, SchafferScandals.com, has an inviting front page with neat sound effects, like the sound of gunshots for Shaffer’s war profiteering and sewing machines (operated by small children, I’m sure) for information about the Marianas.

Unfortunately, after the front page the site drops into opposition-book “researchese” that doesn’t tell a story and immediately makes my eyes glaze over. Despite this shortcoming, the site at least got another story in the Rocky about Schaffer’s ties to Abramoff and the Marianas, and dumped a whole lot of research out there for any reporter intrepid enough to dig through it.

The site also drew the ire of Dick Wadhams, who weirdly decided to attack ProgressNow for taking money from George Soros — like that’s something anyone cares about these days. Even weirder, he attacked Soros for an insider trading conviction he received in a French court in the late 1980s. Yeah, that’s not a mis-type. Wadhams attacked ProgressNow for taking money from a guy convicted by the French in the 80s. Flock of Seagulls was popular in the 80s, but the country’s kind of moved on since then.

And his response to the scandals? Yeah, not so much. Here’s a bit of insider information from a guy whose worked in political communications: when a spokesman changes the subject to the 80s — or France — it’s because he doesn’t have a response. Which means, most likely, there’s some damn good dirt on that SchafferScandals.com site.

So, reporters, whatcha doing after work today? I’d read through it all myself, but I’ve got to, uhh, wash my cat or something. Except I don’t have a cat…
