Ankeney Facing Additional Sex Crime Charges

Randal D. “Randy” Ankeney, who remains jailed in Larimer County on a $1 million bond after his latest arrest last week for sexual assault of a child, was also arrested in January for sexual assault.

Ankeney, 35, a licensed attorney and former rising star in the Colorado Republican Party, was free on a $100,000 bond and facing a Nov. 13 jury trial in Arapahoe County when he was arrested last week in the Larimer County case.

A convicted sex offender, Ankeney was released from prison 15 months ago after serving two years in a 2001 sexual assault plea deal involving a 13-year old girl in El Paso County. He had been living in Highlands Ranch with a girlfriend since last December.

Colorado Confidential has learned that after his January arrest, Ankeney, a 1996 graduate of the Republican Leadership Program  and Gov. Bill Owens’ former appointed economic development representative in Colorado Springs, retained the high-profile Denver law firm of Haddon, Morgan, Mueller, Jordan, Mackey & Foreman. Ankeney’s counsels of record are Gregory Daniels and Pamela Mackey, the defense attorney best known for successfully defending basketball star Kobe Bryant, who was charged with sexual assault in Eagle County in 2003.

Arapahoe County Deputy District Attorney Brian Sugioka said Ankeney is being charged with attempted sexual assault a Class 4 felony, as well as unlawful sexual contact force, also a Class 4 felony, stemming from the January arrest. The assault involves a 20-year old woman.

Ankeney was charged with nine new felony counts related to sexual assault of a minor during his arrest last week; the search warrant, arrest warrant and booking records remain sealed and the Larimer County investigation is ongoing.

It is unclear whether, or how, the new charges could impact the scheduled Nov. 13 jury trial. However, Gregory Daniels, Ankeney’s attorney, says while he is representing Ankeney on the charges from January, he has not been hired to represent him on those resulting from last week’s arrest. On whether his firm had been asked to represent Ankeney in the latest case, Daniels said,  “That would be something I could not answer. I can’t discuss it; it’s not appropriate.”

“Obviously Mr. Ankeney has serious charges and we hope that truth is known and justice is done,” Daniels said.

Ankeney’s father, Dave Ankeney, meanwhile, says he is “absolutely in shock” over his son’s latest arrest. “You’re talking to someone whose got a knife in his heart,” he said.

The senior Ankeney, a commercial real estate broker in Colorado Springs who specializes in church properties, says that he has not visited Randy Ankeney in jail, but, “I will tell you this, as a father I love my son.”

“I hope this is one serious mistake,” Dave Ankeney said. “If he’s innocent it’s a terrible injustice, if not, then he’s got to pay the price.”

Ankeney’s next court appearance in Larimer County is scheduled for Oct. 12.
