Juan Cole not shedding tears for Anthony Weiner
As the parade of Congressman Anthony Weiner’s self-love skin shots continues to tramp across the internet, University of Michigan foreign-policy big thinker Juan Cole says never mind the man’s sad digital life; Weiner’s take on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is much more relevant and lamentable. Fact is, Cole writes, the congressman’s bad personal behavior presents an opportunity to replace him with someone less toxically biased toward Israel.
“Weiner is so blinded by his allegiance to Israel and so studied in his ignorance of the Middle East that he has played a uniformly sinister role in that aspect of foreign policy. If he were replaced by, say, an up-and-coming Dominican-American politician from Queens who had some sympathy with Arabs, that would be all to the good.”
At his blog, Cole compiles a list of the “Top Ten Things Anthony Weiner has Said that are Worse than Sexting” related to the Middle East.
On the list: Weiner maintained that Amnesty International and the New York Times are biased against Israel; justified the Israeli Navy attack on the Mavi Marmara relief ship in 2010; refused to condemn Israeli use of cluster bombs on civilians in Lebanon; argues Israel does not occupy the West Bank; characterized Israel’s 2008-2009 war on Gaza as a humane war.
