Hush, Hush and on the QT: Denver Selected for Democratic Convention

On the record, the location for the Democratic National Committee convention has been whittled down to New York City or Denver. But off the record, the choice has been made: Denver!A week ago this is what national syndicated columnist George Will wrote:

Four years ago, all eight Mountain West states — Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming — had Republican governors. If Bill Ritter wins Colorado’s governorship, Democrats will hold five of eight governorships in the Mountain West, which in the 1990s was even more reliably Republican than the South. In 2004, a change of a total of 63,508 votes in Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico would have given those states’ 19 electoral votes and the presidency to John Kerry. No wonder the Democrats’ 2008 convention will probably be in Denver.

On the Nov. 12th edition of Roundtable on This Week with George Stephanopoulos, George Will reiterated that Denver will be hosting the Democratic Convention.

Although it is doubtful Mr. Will can read DNC chair, Howard Dean’s mind, he certainly has his ear to the Washington DC political gossip mill, which has been grinding kernels of pro-Denver rumors these days.

As related before on Colorado Confidential, Howard Dean has a long association with Colorado and has been lobbied hard to chose Denver as the site for the DNC convention location.

Dean will making the final selection soon based upon recommendations from the DNC convention committee and upon proposals and promises made by the host city. There is speculation that Dean will either wait for the DNC executive meeting Dec. 1-3 in Washington DC or make the announcement as soon as next weekend at The Association of State Democratic Chairs (ASDC) in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

In any case, the inside political rumors seem to be going Denver’s way….
