Hearing on state of charter schools exemplifies divisiveness of issue

The House Subcommittee on Early Childhood, Elementary, and Secondary Education held a June 1 hearing on the state of charter schools in America. The testimony and series of questions and answers spanned nearly three hours, covering topics like charter school accreditation processes, the increased role of private management firms in operating local charter schools and the difficulty of scaling successful charter schools to address state-specific and national needs.

Dept. of Education to distribute $150 million in new round rewarding innovators

The U.S. Department of Education has announced the latest round of grants for the Investing in Innovation, or i3, fund. The $150 million will be distributed to winning school districts, groups of school districts, non-profits affiliated with school districts or consortium of schools that raise student achievement and close performance gaps. It will also look for applicants seeking to improve teacher effectiveness, as well as those that address graduation and drop-out rates.

$1 million in AmeriCorps grants for Colorado announced

Lt.Gov Joseph A. Garcia this week is distributing more than $1 million to four Colorado organizations through Serve Colorado, the Governor’s Commission on Community Service. The funding comes from AmeriCorps grants from the Corporation for National and Community Service. In July, Serve Colorado will announce additional grants supported by $2,437,386 in AmeriCorps money.

New education report chastises U.S. for not studying international models

A new report (PDF) from the National Center on Education and the Economy has concluded the U.S. is not proactive enough in adopting successful education models from abroad.

Colorado back in Race to the Top

It was announced Wednesday that Colorado is one nine states to be eligible to apply for the third round of Race to the Top funds to augment state local funding for Colorado schools.
