U.S. Marshals step up security for Boulder late-term abortion doctor

Federal marshals are protecting a Boulder abortion clinic and the doctor who runs it, a Boulder police spokeswoman said Monday afternoon. The increased security was in place a day after Dr. George Tiller, who ran a similar clinic providing late-term abortions, was gunned down at a church Sunday morning in Wichita, Kan. Boulder physician Warren Hern, among a handful of doctor in the country to provide very late-term abortions, said Sunday he has been targeted by the anti-abortion movement for years. His Boulder Abortion Clinic has specialized in late-term abortions since its founding in 1975. "I'm next on the list," Hern said.

Obama’s smart grid enthusiasm makes us less safe!

Here comes just about the perfect Fox News story line. As the Obama Administration boosts stimulus money for smart-grid installation, National Grid, a utility company installing the new technology in New York state, says the energy delivery and monitoring technology may provide prime information to evildoers looking to carry out "targeted attacks" on the nation's "critical infrastructure."

“High holiday” throng votes with feet, lungs to legalize marijuana

Despite official discouragement, roughly 10,000 people gathered yesterday at Norlin Quadrangle, a large field in the center of the University of Colorado Boulder campus, to rally for legalization of marijuana by smoking massive quantities altogether in the open air.

Jury awards Churchill not cash but compliment

The jury in the Ward Churchill trial decided in favor of the defendant yesterday. The members agreed after a day and a half of deliberation with the so-called 9/11 professor's claims that he was wrongfully dismissed from the University of Colorado — that he was fired, basically, to appease national outcry over his controversial writings on the 9/11 attacks. In awarding him a mere $1, the jury chose not to compensate him in cash but paid him instead the kind of compliment he will likely appreciate: The minimal cash award suggests the jury concluded that Churchill, although unlikeable or unsympathetic, was right.

Local officials: Some stimulus proposals may seem absurd

Thornton wants more than $300,000 for a police-dog program. Boulder wants $6 million to upgrade its fleet of hybrid cars into "super hybrids." Englewood wants $300,000 for a "self-contained breathing apparatus" and $100,000 for a mobile data terminal to replace obsolete equipment.

CU Boulder students plan to kiss by UMC fountain to promote...

Anyone standing near the University of Colorado’s Dalton Trumbo Fountain in Boulder just before noon Friday had better pucker up. Students are planning a "flash mob event with a twist" -- same-sex couples and their allies will lock lips for two minutes and then disperse, to express "frustration that same-sex public displays of affection are often treated with less tolerance than their heterosexual counterparts," according to the event's Facebook page.

Ritter names Madden climate czar

Living in Colorado can be confusing. Last week saw record-breaking warmth along the Front Range, with temperatures reaching the 70s. Earlier this week, we marked the coldest night of the year as the mercury fell below zero. It seems as though there ought to be someone to call when the weather swings so wildly, someone in state government who could coordinate things when residents have questions or complaints about the climate changing like it does. Alas, that someone won't be former House Majority Leader Alice Madden, the Boulder Democrat named this week to the new position of climate-control coordinator. She has other fish to fry.
