VIDEO: Montana Rep jumps shark, calls drunk driving laws ‘job killers’

Republican lawmakers have made opposition to industry regulation a top priority, repeatedly framing public health and safety laws as "nanny state" "job killers." On Wednesday, Montana Republican Congressman Alan Hale used the GOP anti-government "job killer" line to defend drunk driving. He argued that drunk driving laws were killing "small businesses" in his state-- small businesses like taverns that make money and "create jobs" by sometimes sending people off into the night bubbly in the head and weaving down Montana roadways. In his ridiculous insincerity, Hale made a satire of GOP politics that would have made Jon Stewart proud.

Salazar report debunks GOP claim administration is blocking oil and gas...

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today released a report requested by President Barack Obama showing that two-thirds of all offshore oil and gas leases in the Gulf of Mexico and half of all onshore leases on federal lands are not currently being used by the energy companies that purchased the leases.

Gardner on GAO report: Massive waste

When was the last time you heard a politician campaign on promises of cutting government waste? When was the last time those promises turned out to be empty? When was the last time waste turned out to mean schools and health care? Maybe it is different this time.

Colorado climate-change clash: Gardner votes down DeGette on greenhouse gases

The House Energy and Commerce Committee was the site of a climate change Colorado showdown Tuesday. Considering a bill that would block the Environmental Protection Agency from regulating green-house gas emissions, the committee's majority Republicans voted in lockstep against broad consensus among the world's scientists that climate change exists. Colorado Democratic member of the committee Rep. Diana DeGette introduced an amendment that asserted that greenhouse gases generated by human activity were the "root cause" of global warming. Colorado Republican Rep. Cory Gardner joined with the other thirty Republicans in voting down DeGette's amendment and two other similar amendments put forward by Democrats.

Tea Party freshman Gardner votes with Dems to keep government running

The Colorado delegation in Washington voted five in favor and two against the stopgap budget passed by the House Tuesday. It was the second temporary fix to the budget passed in the last few weeks and it is even less popular than the first one among Tea Party conservatives, who believe Republicans should hold steady and risk a government shutdown to force compromise from Democrats on spending. House Majority Leader Boehner lost more than fifty conservative votes and had to lean on Democrats to help him pass the measure.

As GOP fights to gut EPA, new report indicates the Clean...

Just as the House Energy and Commerce Committee, chaired by Rep. Fred Upton of Michigan, seeks to reduce the EPA’s ability to regulate greenhouse gas emissions through the Clean Air Act, a new EPA study concludes that the Act has saved millions of lives.

Gardner hammers on EPA re Clean Air Act but poll says...

U.S. Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., helped lead last week’s GOP onslaught against the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s regulation of greenhouse gas emissions, despite polling in his congressional district showing two-thirds of his constituents feel “Congress should let the EPA do its job.”

DeGette leading defense against House GOP assault on abortion rights

Colorado Representative and head of the Congressional Pro-Choice Caucus Diana DeGette is surprised to find herself doing heated battle on a number of fronts in the war over abortion rights this early in the year. This session of Congress was supposed to be about jobs and the economy, she has said, but the new Republican majority right out of the gate has gone full steam ahead with two bills aimed at expanding restrictions on federal abortion funding while, outside of Capitol Hill, conservative media activists have launched an attack on Planned Parenthood, using cut-and-paste undercover videos to spur Congress to slash all federal aid to the organization.

Colorado groups leery of Gardner, GOP ‘reining in’ EPA on Clean...

Conservation groups are girding for battle in what they claim is a coming assault on the Clean Air Act by U.S. House Republicans, including Colorado congressmen Cory Gardner, Mike Coffman and Doug Lamborn. Environment Colorado today issued a release ahead of the State of the Union address urging President Barack Obama “to protect the nation’s public health against threats from dirty energy lobbyists and their allies in Congress.”
