John Kerry rips on the ‘myth of the maverick’

John Kerry came out swinging hard on behalf of Sen. Barack Obama Wednesday night, countering many of the Republican attacks that he failed to aggressively defend himself against four years ago.

What about energy? Democrats tailor their answer as the debate shifts

In a rambunctious press conference that could forecast the tone of the energy debate to come, House Democratic leaders clashed with Republican supporters in Denver Tuesday over each party's approach to offshore oil drilling.

Romney comes out snarling at secretive GOP lair in Denver

McCain is expected to name his VP pick on Friday, in part to dull any post-convention bounce the Obama-Biden ticket might get. Romney, along with Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, is considered a front-runner for the ticket. Pawlenty is scheduled to arrive in Denver on Thursday to join the Republican attack, organized at Not Ready '08. On Wednesday, failed Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani is scheduled to rip apart the Dems on national security at the undisclosed, secretive location — 2810 N. Speer Blvd., to be exact — in North Denver.

Udall, Schaffer throw gas on McCain water-statement wildfire

Congressman Mark Udall Friday in Vail graciously resisted “piling on” Arizona Sen. John McCain for his now-infamous gaffe last weekend about wanting to renegotiate the Colorado River Compact, while the “cold, dead political carcass” of Udall’s Senate opponent, Bob Schaffer, nervously laughed off what McCain “may” have said to the Pueblo Chieftain.

Schaffer to strut “cold, dead political carcass” at water confab

Bob Schaffer will have the chance tomorrow to further distance himself from John McCain's disastrous suggestion to "renegotiate" the Colorado River Compact when he joins Mark Udall at the Colorado Water Congress Summer Convention in Vail. The two Senate candidates are scheduled to address water policy and take questions from water movers and shakers at 11 a.m. at the Vail Marriott Mountain Resort.

Many mansions vex McCain

John McCain isn't sure how many houses he owns — four? seven? ten? — but the Obama campaign is darn sure McCain's befuddlement will help keep voters from handing him the keys to a certain Pennsylvania Avenue address in Washington. And you can bet the one in 390 homeowners in foreclosure in Colorado have a better grasp than McCain of the number of homes they own — or are in danger of losing.

Renegotiate the Colorado River Compact? McCain says ‘never mind’

So apparently that part about how John McCain called for a renegotiation of the Colorado River Compact — or as he put it, “the compact that is in effect, obviously, needs to be renegotiated over time amongst the interested parties ...” Well, turns out those words were "mistakenly construed." Nah, the Republican presidential candidate doesn’t really want to alienate Colorado voters with such a radical proposition. No, instead McCain wants us to move along. As if, there's nothing to see here, folks.

McCain gaffe on water rights could lose Colorado voters

Did John McCain signal the end of his Republican presidential run and launch his next campaign for the U.S. Senate in a phone interview with The Pueblo Chieftain last week?
