State attorneys general descend on Colorado Springs to talk DNA, decency

Dozens of chief legal officers from around the country meet this week in Colorado Springs to discuss state legal issues at the National Association of Attorneys General's summer meeting. Amid scenic tours and an authentic Wild West show at a nearby dude ranch, the attorneys general plan to consider questions about U.S.-Mexico border problems, sharing DNA databases, attacking Ponzi Schemes and dealing with the federal Communications Decency Act.

Convicted killer Ray handed death sentence for ordering witness slaying

An Arapahoe County jury decided Monday that Robert Keith Ray will be sentenced to die for arranging the 2005 killing of a witness to another murder committed by Ray a year earlier, the Aurora Sentinel reports.

Suthers warns against scam selling subscriptions to extinct newspaper

Attorney General John Suthers told Colorado residents to be on the lookout for door-to-door scammers selling subscriptions to the "new" Rocky Mountain News, a Denver newspaper that ceased publication in February. According to a warning issued Friday by Suthers and AARP Elder Watch, salesmen have been selling the bogus subscriptions in Colorado Springs, telling victims they can only accept cash.

Where does the Colorado GOP go from here? Ask Dick and...

Colorado Independent readers, your citizen journalism moment has arrived. Rocky Mountain PBS talk show host Aaron Harber is requesting questions for his two-part series on the future of the Colorado Republican Party. But hurry, your deadline is 10 a.m. Monday.

Ritter, Suthers set aside partisanship to fight air pollution

The only things missing from the ozone-busting tag team of Gov. Bill Ritter and Attorney General John Suthers are Mexican wrestling masks to completely shield their partisan identities. The state's chief executive and chief lawyer have teamed up to fight the belching coal-fired Four Corners Power Plant and the planned Desert Rock plant located just over the state's southwestern border with New Mexico.

Dems cheer, GOP blasts Supreme Court ruling on property-tax freeze

The Colorado Supreme Court ruled 6-1 Monday that a controversial property-tax law doesn't violate the Taxpayer Bill of Rights, known as TABOR, the state constitutional amendment that limits taxes and spending. A 2007 state law froze mill-levy rates in school districts that had already voted to "de-Bruce," or waive limits on property tax collection. Last year, the measure raised $117 million and is expected to garner $1.7 billion over 11 years.

Suthers agrees with Amendment 54 proponents: ‘Does not infringe rights’

Today the state attorney general's office confirmed a report published this morning in The Colorado Independent that Attorney General John Suthers met with proponents of Amendment 54 -- the "clean government" constitutional amendment passed as a ballot initiative last November -- and that he agrees with them that the initiative does not unduly infringe upon expression.

GOP contenders line up, ‘wait and see’ whether to challenge Bennet...

With Monday's withdrawal from the Senate race by Attorney General John Suthers, state Republicans lack a clear front-runner to take on newly appointed Democrat Michael Bennet in 2010. Other top GOP prospects have hesitated to enter the race, weighing both their own fortunes and the emerging profile of Bennet, the former Denver Public Schools chief, who lacks a voting record and has never before run for office. It's a markedly different tone than state Republicans sounded last month when contenders jostled for the chance to take on an appointed senator.

Poll: Bennet would beat Tancredo, lose to Owens, but is largely...

Colorado's junior senator, Michael Bennet, is viewed more favorably than not among voters who know him but is still a mystery to nearly half of those contacted by Public Policy Polling (PPP) in a survey released Tuesday. The Democrat beat three potential GOP opponents in hypothetical 2010 match-ups — he bested former U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo 48-39, and scored six-point leads over state Attorney General John Suthers and former U.S. Rep. Scott McInnis, though both said Monday they weren't interested in the race — and polled three points behind former Gov. Bill Owens, who hasn't indicated any interest in running for the Senate.

Suthers drops Senate bid, says he’s staying put as attorney general

Putting the kibosh on speculation he would seek the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in 2010, Colorado Attorney General John Suthers announced Monday he plans to seek re-election to the state's top law enforcement office and won't be seeking higher office next year. "I will not run for the U.S. Senate," Suthers says in a lengthy statement filled with "soul-searching."
