In advance of Steadman bill, surveys show strong support in Colorado...

As state Senator Pat Steadman gets set to introduce his civil unions legislation in Denver next week, new public opinion poll results bolster the case for the bill. The results of a Public Policy Polling survey (pdf) conducted this past weekend match almost exactly results of a survey conducted last January by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner and American Viewpoint. More than 70 percent of Coloradans support legally recognized domestic partnerships, including those between same-sex couples.

Steadman pushes one PERA bill, and pans another

Sen. Pat Steadman, D-Denver, has introduced legislation that would cause PERA members to continue making the higher payments they began making because of legislation last year. He referred to his bill as "a necessary evil", but pointed to a bill carried by Republican senators as further compounding the problem.

Hemmed in by state anti-gay marriage law, Steadman to introduce civil...

Denver Democratic state Senator Pat Steadman is sponsoring a bill that would make same-sex civil unions legal in Colorado. The move is being cheered as long overdue by gay rights supporters, who have been stymied in efforts to win equality by a constitutional amendment that outlaws gay marriage in the state. In weighing whether or not to introduce the legislation this summer, Steadman told the Colorado Independent that "promoting a lesser status for gay people is not ideal” but that, in the short term, "people could really benefit from civil unions.”

Colorado lawmaker acts fast to secure funding for school breakfasts

Rep. Cherylin Peniston, D-Westminster, announced today that she will introduce a bill to restore funding to the Colorado Department of Education’s free breakfast program. Republican members of the Joint Budget Committee last week thought $125,000 for the breakfast program would be a good place to start cutting expenses to make up for major tax-revenue shortfalls this year.

Carroll: Bring on the civil unions

State Senator Pat Steadman, D-Denver, and Rep. Mark Ferrandino, D-Denver, today picked up a somewhat unlikely ally in their quest to pass civil union legislation next year. Denver Post columnist Vince Carroll today opined that civil unions were no threat to traditional marriage, though he also commented that allowing heterosexual couples to choose civil unions as an alternative to marriage might be going too far.

Lambert to introduce Arizona-style immigration legislation for Colorado

Colorado legislators are poised to introduce immigration legislation that may mimic that in Arizona. Critics say it could cost the state a fortune.

Top Colorado gay rights group weighs in on 2010 elections

Gay rights group One Colorado this week released a list of fifty state candidates it will endorse and throw its fundraising and grassroots volunteer support behind for the 2010 election, now only weeks away. Two Republicans made the list, Larry Liston, a northeast Colorado Springs social conservative, and Kevin Priola, a freshman Representative from Brighton northeast of Denver and a family businessman.
