Coffman Swears More Than Necessary

It’s official. Mike Coffman is Colorado’s new Secretary of State. And just to make sure, he took his oath twice. As planned, Coffman was sworn in at a private ceremony this morning at 9 a.m. Apparently miffed because he would not be allowed to speak at the Governor’s inauguration, Coffman had declined to be sworn in along with others taking statewide office at the Capitol.

But, it seemed this morning, Coffman ultimately didn’t want to be left out of the big pageant, and was sworn in right after the CU Board of Regents. As she called on him to take his oath, Colorado Supreme Court Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey asked “the new Treasurer, Mike Coffman,” to come forward. Mullarkey realized her mistake, though, and Coffman took his oath for the second time in as many hours.
