Wiretap: Another horrific botched execution

The state of Oklahoma had finally gotten its way and was about to complete the first of two executions when everything went wrong. The prisoner, Clayton Lockett, was supposed to be unconscious when suddenly he began to move and to call out. His body twitched and his foot moved. The doctor said the “line had blown.” Witnesses said the newly introduced death-row drug combo — the source of which the state had refused to reveal — must have failed. One of Lockett’s lawyers, who witnessed the execution, said, “It looked like torture.” Lockett would eventually die, but of a heart attack. And so the arguments on the death penalty begin anew. The second execution was stayed for two weeks.

James Downie writes that the botched execution shows why the death penalty must end. Via the Washington Post.

This was hardly the first botched execution. There have been botched executions as long as there have been executions. Via Vox.

People may have signed up for Obamacare, but the polls show the people still aren’t convinced. Via the National Journal.

“Only about 6 percent of Americans hunt even once in a year. That’s just slightly more than the number who attend a ballet performance: 3.9 percent.” Why do gun rights succeed where other conservative causes fail? Via the Atlantic.

At its convention, the NRA says it “can save America.” Yep, that’s what they said.
