Looking Like A Mayoral Cakewalk

Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera’s awkward landing in fourth place in a field of six candidates for Congress left many wags predicting that the onetime toast of conservative politics in the state’s second largest city – was toast.

But that was so last August. Now, in a little more than a week, voters will receive their ballots in the mail, and for all practical purposes, as noted in a recent column in the Colorado Springs Independent, it’s looking like a cakewalk for Rivera in his bid for a second term.

After all, the mayor’s most challenging competitor is a man who goes by the nickname “Blabbing Mike.” The two others running are Tony Carpenter – who currently lists his entire occupation as “Frito-Lay” – and Tony Tyler, an insurance agent who has spent a total of $225 on his campaign, including $25 for fuel.In addition to the mayor’s race in the country’s 49th largest city – which has a population of about 380,000 – four at-large city council seats are up for grabs.

But the election has been so lackluster that, until last week, Rivera didn’t even have a current Website. Now up and running, the site lists numerous and impressive “accomplishments” that Rivera, the mayor for four years and a city councilman for the six years before that, is personally taking credit for.
