A bill that would allow parolees to vote survived a Senate Judiciary committee hearing today by a 4-3 partisan vote.
Before that, the panel also decided on a 4-3 vote to kill a motion by Sen. Shawn Mitchell, R-Broomfield, to strike the clause that would allow parolees to vote.
The proposal now heads to the Senate floor for further debate. The hearing was generally positive for the bill, while the clause to allow parolees to vote took center stage.
Groups like the ACLU and Colorado Criminal Justice Reform Coalition spoke in favor of the bill, while representatives from the County Sheriffs of Colorado spoke out against it.
The proposal has now been passed by the Senate State, Veterans, & Military Affairs committee along with the Judiciary committee.
