Joan Fitz-Gerald, current Democratic State Senate President, has announced today she will be running for Congress in the Second District now held by Rep. Mark Udall, who will be jumping into the U.S. Senate in 2008.From the Fitz-Gerald press release:
I’m excited to announce my candidacy for Congress and bring Colorado’s record of change to Washington. Together, we have accomplished a lot and seen many positive changes here in Colorado, and now it’s time for us to help the nation solve tough problems like our country’s health care crisis and getting our troops out of Iraq.
Opposing troop escalation in Iraq, Fitz-Gerald said she supports the bi-partisan efforts in Congress to bring the war to a close.
A state senator since 2000, she broke the glass ceiling this year by becoming the first woman to serve as the State Senate President. Fitz-Gerald has worked on health care, renewable energy, environment and education issues. She was part of a bi-partisan effort to pass Referendum C, which resolved some of the state’s budget crisis.
Will Shafroth, the first executive director of the Great Outdoors Colorado Trust Fund and current head of the Colorado Conservation Trust, announced last week. Another potential Democratic candidate is Jared Polis, who has served on the Colorado Board of Education. No Republican candidate has announced yet, but former Eagle County Commissioner Tom Stone is mentioned as a possible contender.
