UPDATE: The set date for the fundraiser is August 16th.
Although the exact date is unclear, Democratic Governor Mark Warner will be traveling to Colorado to fundraise for congressional candidate Bill Winter.
Winter, who is the Democratic challenger against Rep. Tom Tancredo in the sixth congressional district, was picked by voters in an online contest held by Warner via his website, Forward Together. The grand prize was a fundraiser with the Governor.
According to the website, a total of 18,500 votes were cast in a series of three rounds. The site stated the purpose of the contest was to foster Democrats who were “able to break through and win in traditionally Republican areas.” Political blogs, or web logs, also played an important role in the contest by encouraging readers to support certain candidates and vote online. This in turn, spurred competition among different blog authors.
“We are having a friendly (ok, this is Texas politics- ruthless) competition with Colorado who is neck and neck with John to win this thing,” wrote one poster on the Burnt Orange Report blog, speaking about John Courage, a congressional candidate in Texas.
“The Texan Bloggers over at Burnt Orange Report are making us look frail,” another blogger wrote, on a Colorado blog called Square State.
The sixth district is home to conservative metro-suburbs like Highlands Ranch, and has supported Congressman Tom Tancredo in four straight elections.
Money from the Warner fundraiser could be spent on valuable campaign resources for Winter.
