Denver could now be the frontrunner for the 2008 Democratic National Convention after the city of New Orleans pulled itself from consideration. The race for the convention is now down to three cities: Denver, Minneapolis and New York. Denver is thought to have a natural advantage because of the interest in drawing attention to Western states in advance of the 2008 Presidential election. Besides, who wants to go to Minneapolis? James “SpongeDob” Dobson, leader of Colorado Springs-based Focus on the Family, isn’t content with sticking his nose into politics; now he’s trying to stop the sale of the Atlanta Braves baseball team. John Malone, the Colorado gazillionaire director of Liberty Media, is seeking to buy the Braves from Time Warner.
Focus on the Family says Malone is a “porn magnate” because Liberty Media’s “On Command” hotel room movie service allows people to purchase pornographic movies. That obviously makes Liberty Media unfit to own the Braves because…um…I don’t know. Does SpongeDob think Liberty Media will make Braves players take their at-bats without pants on?
By the way, I have a cool porn magnate on my refrigerator. LINK
M.E. Sprengelmeyer of the Rocky Mountain News reports that two Colorado Republicans voted against renewal of the Voting Rights Act. Reps. Tom Tancredo and Joel Hefley were two of only 33 ‘no’ votes for the measure, which they opposed because they don’t like the idea of printing multilanguage ballots. LINK
Here’s more from Washington Post and The New York Times.
Lynn Bartels of the Rocky Mountain News takes a look back at the special session on illegal immigration and how the Democrats turned the tables on Republicans. “In just one month, Republicans went from praising their governor for demanding a special session to criticizing him for making the agenda too broad, to cheering him for ripping the leading Democratic proposal, to accusing him of betrayal. In just one month, Democrats went from reeling from a court decision that most believed left them vulnerable this November to this headline in The Gazette in Colorado Springs, the heart of GOP territory: ‘Democrats big winners at special session.'” LINK
Former U.S. Senate candidate and beer magnate (that doesn’t sound as cool as ‘porn magnate,’ does it?) Pete Coors apologized yesterday for allegedly driving drunk. The Denver Post reported that Coors had been arrested in May on a drunken-driving charge. He later apologized and said that he had been returning from a wedding reception to his home in Golden. Coors is the centerpiece of many of the beer company’s advertisements, including those that advocate that people do not drink and drive. “I should have planned ahead for a ride,” Coors said Thursday in a written statement. “For years, I’ve advocated the responsible use of our company’s products. That’s still my message, and our company’s message. I am sorry that I didn’t follow it myself.” LINK
Get ready for $3 gasoline in Colorado, says The Denver Post. The average cost of a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline could reach $3 in Colorado as early as today. LINK
Nowhere in Colorado, and virtually nowhere else in the country, are rising gas prices hitting harder than in Grand Junction, says Bob Kretschman of The Grand Junction Sentinel. A new study shows that Grand Junction residents spend 6.6% of their average household income on gasoline
