Bush, in Bed With NARAL?

At first Focus on the Family reported being “shocked” by George W. Bush’s plans to endorse Plan B, making emergency contraception available over-the-counter to people over 18.

“President Bush has a solid track record supporting parent’s rights but he’s missed the mark with this endorsement,” Focus wrote in a statement issued on Aug. 22.  “Selling this drug over the counter to any adult who wants to buy it virtually guarantees that it will end up in the hands of teenage girls without their parents’ knowledge or their doctor’s supervision. Over-the-counter status for Plan B – regardless of the age requirement – is an invitation for adult men to pressure underage girls to have sex with the promise of an easily accessible magic pill to prevent or abort a pregnancy.

It was a shocker indeed for me too, that the president OKed Plan B. Maybe Barbara and Jenna and Laura have some sway after all…

Then on Aug. 24, Focus issued another statement condemning the decision, calling it a “disaster” and a “danger” – and actually suggesting that Bush,er, the FDA, is in bed with NARAL. Hmmm. Now that’s a little over the line, even for Focus.

“This decision is a disaster and a danger for girls and their parents. The FDA has brazenly overstepped its authority in order to appease the likes of Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion and Reproductive Rights Action League, whose interest in this matter has nothing to do with the health of women and everything to do with taking a whack at pro-lifers for profit’s sake. After all, it’s not like Plan B hasn’t been readily available by prescription for years. Is the fight here for a woman’s right to choose not to visit a doctor?”
