Curiouser and Curiouser

Some very troubling concerns have come to light about one charitable beneficiary of Denver-based The Trailhead Group, LLC – one of the largest pro-Republican political committees in the country.

On March 6, 2006, Trailhead claims to have written a $20,000 check to Colorado Good Government Initiative (CGGI), a benign-sounding group until one digs a little.

After exhaustive searching and cross-checking of online documents from the Colorado Secretary of State’s website, IRS, Google, Lexis-Nexis, and charity watchdogs, a search of “Colorado Good Government Initiative” and various permutations of the name displayed no records of this group. This search was conducted on Wednesday, September 13.

Soon after fellow Confidant Jason Bane posted his story on Trailhead’s questionable finances, Colorado Confidential returned to the SoS’s web site. Later, on the evening of Friday, September 15, a search of the SoS web site for “good government” recovered a listing of Colorado Good Government Initiative as a non-profit.

Yet, at about the same time on Friday evening these web sites still had no record of CGGI:

Lexis-Nexis
Google

Coincidence?  Odd quirk? Probably not.  But no one can say for sure.  Stayed tuned for more on the Trailhead saga.
