Three weeks ago state Rep. Michael Merrifield found out he had cancer in his neck and throat. The high-energy chairman of the House Education Committee starts radiation treatment next week at Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Denver and wants everyone to know that if he is not quite as visible as usual in the coming weeks, it’s not because he’s resting on his laurels.
And if he loses his hair, no, he didn’t pull it out in response to the ongoing antics of state Sen. Dave Schultheis.
“I’ll be fine,” says Merrifield, a Democrat from Manitou Springs. “I intend to carry out my responsibilities as usual, though I’m told my energy level will be back down to just average, given my usual hyperactivity.”Merrifield, never a smoker, says he felt a small lump in his neck and went in for testing after the election. He learned the results
