Legislators’ Real Jobs

Are Colorado legislators regular folks like you and me? Most of the legislators actually have professional careers outside their political one under The Golden Dome. On the House and Senate web pages, legislators list their occupations and here is a short compilation on what they do in their real life.Serving in the House, out of 65 members there are approximately seven who said they are business people or business owners. Not surprisingly, the largest single group was attorneys at 14-it would make sense lawyers like to make laws.

Five State Reps are retired, four are in real estate and development, and seven are educators. There are two each in nonprofits, other government services, financial business and multi-media.

There is a farmer, cowboy, minister, nurse, engineer and bartender and some didn’t answer. Seven said their sole profession was being a legislator.

Out of 35 State Senators, eight consider themselves as business owners, four are attorneys, and there are five educators, three each as farmers, real estate/development and investors. There is one engineer, nurse, veterinarian and one with a nonprofit background. Two senators are retired government workers and two others consider themselves full time legislators. Again, some do not list their occupation.

Of the different professions mentioned above, Rep. Kathleen Curry (D-61) is one of the representatives who considers herself a legislator by profession. But she is also a wife of a Gunnison Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucketarea rancher and that might have helped earned her the chairmanship of the Agriculture, Livestock & Natural Resources Committee.

Kent Lambert (R-14) is a retired Colonel in the US Air Force and his voice is heard as a member of the Veterans and Military Affairs.

Can you guess who is not a member of the House Ag Committee?

Senator Isgar (second picture from the left) is chair of the Senate Ag Committee. From left to right, Rep. Ray Rose (R-58), Sen. Jim Isgar (D-6), Rep. Buffie McFadyen (D-47) and Rep. Wes McKinley (D-64).

Not surprisingly, Rep. Wes McKinley is the one who identified himself as the cowboy.

What’s with Republican veterinarians in Larimer County? Do they all become “Senators” like State Senator Steve Johnson (R-15)?

Rep. Debbie Stafford (R-40) probably has the most unusual array of occupations. She says she is an ordained minister/counselor/auctioneer, which may have something to do with the committees she serves on — the Health and Human Services and the Judiciary.
