Ever since Doug Lamborn was elected to represent Colorado’s 5th Congressional District last November, we’ve been hoping for, yes, even heavily promoting, what would be in our opinion the most entertaining TV interview of the year: Lamborn being lassoed by Stephen Colbert.
Well guess what? His spokesman, Chris Harvin, reports he actually saw the Comedy Central star walk down the street, right past him, while he was sitting at a restaurant with his uncle and a few friends while visiting the Isle of Palms in South Carolina last weekend.
Keep reading for what happened next.Guess what? Harvin didn’t even try to stop Colbert to ask him if he’d be interested in an interview with his boss – who just two weeks ago introduced an amendment to whack all funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
“Definitely I should have,” admits Harvin, a bit sheepishly. “I was too involved in my conversation and my sandwich.”
And what kind of a sandwich was so engrossing as to overshadow Colbert?
“It was probably a grilled cheese. Actually, it was a crabcake sandwich,” Harvin says. “My friend recognized him. Doesn’t he have a house there?”
According to the Charleston, S.C. Convention and Visitors Bureau, Colbert, named one of Time Magazine‘s 100 most influential people of 2006, is a Charleston native. On July 7 he appeared at the Charleston RiverDogs home baseball game, where he threw out the “first pint” of ice cream in the game against the Savannah Sand Gnats.
Harvin reports that when he saw Colbert last Friday, or possibly Saturday, the comedian was wearing a T-shirt and a pair of shorts; there was no trail of women or fans following. “He was just wandering down the street,” Harvin says.
The congressman’s spokesman said he just recently watched the Colbert Report for the first time. But Lamborn has clearly long been a fan. Shortly after he was elected in November, Lamborn was asked if was ready for prime time. “I don’t think anyone’s ever ready for Colbert,” he said.
