As of Aug. 3, it’s illegal in Colorado to discriminate against people in the workplace on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. And now GLBT people who find themselves victims of such discrimination have a resource for legal help. The GLBT Center of Colorado has a new service called CLIP, a hotline offering advice and referrals to GLBT-friendly attorneys. The service has received about 150 phone calls so far in 2007.
Colorado is one of 19 states that bars discrimination based on sexual orientation and one of 11 banning discrimination based on gender identity. There is currently no federal protection law, but lawmakers in the U.S. House are currently considering the Employment Non-Discrimination Act of 2007 (ENDA), which would expand protection to GLBT people in all states. The bill has wide support with 165 co-sponsors, including Colorado Democrats Diana DeGette, Mark Udall, John Salazar and Ed Perlmutter.
