Colorado’s Place in Gay History

Long-known as “the hate state” after voters approved a constitutional ban against adding sexual orientation to discrimination laws, Colorado is still making history.Former Democratic state treasurer Mark Ferrandino was sworn in Monday as the first openly gay member of the Colorado House of Representatives. It was a fitting event for the first day of GLBT History Month, a celebration modeled after Black History Month and Women’s History Month. Some states, communities and organizations have recognized October as Gay History Month for years, but it wasn’t until 2006 that the GLBT group Equality Forum decided to nationally coordinate a GLBT History Month celebration.

Equality Forum chose 31 GLBT icons who either made major contributors to their fields, were national leaders or advanced gay rights. Honorees include Alexander the Great, writer Susan Sontag and filmmaker Pedro Almod
