CU Regent seeks to replace Tupa in Colorado legislature.University of Colorado Regent Cindy Carlisle today announced the launch of her campaign for the Democratic nomination for Colorado Senate District 18. The seat is currently held by Tom Tupa, who is term-limited.
As a regent, Carlisle has a been a strong supporter of “faculty governance.” She cast the only vote against firing controversial professor Ward Churchill in July, saying then that the regents should defer to the recommendations of the faculty, which had called for suspending Churchill for a year and demoting him, rather than firing him.
In a release announcing her candidacy, Carlisle promised to push for better funding of higher education:
Colorado ranks 48th in state support for, and 50th in revenue per student expended on its colleges and universities. Without a breakthrough in new funding, an education crisis is imminent.
“I reject state priorities that value new prisons above strong universities,” Carlisle said. “We should aim for no less than excellence now in higher education.”
She also promised to champion local solutions to climate change, working for lower carbon dioxide emissions and better fuel-efficiency standards.
Carlisle’s campaign manager is Tom Hagerty, former budget director for the city of Boulder. Senate district 18 includes Boulder and environs.
