When the Rocky Mountain News decided to commit an entire day and at least five reporters to live-blog a big sinkhole on Interstate 70 back in February, we thought we’d seen it all. Until this week, when the daily newspaper inexplicably decided to live-blog “Take your dog to work day.” Oh well, at least they didn’t think to live-blog the truly ridiculous, like the opening of Costco. Right. That was the Colorado Springs Gazette that did that.
No offense to our Fourth Estate comrades, but is live-blogging store openings and Fido in the cubicle and sinkholes really what we’ve sunk to?
Yes it is.
At least it makes for some laughs, amid the groans. Let’s take the February sinkhole that opened up on Interstate 70 in north Denver, for example. Over here at The Colorado Independent, we were simply astounded to witness the Rocky’s innovation to provide up-to-the-minute coverage of a hole in the highway. What a truly unique idea, we said. Or to be more specific, this is what we said: THEY’RE LIVE-BLOGGING THE SINKHOLE!!!
As pathetic as it sounds now, we here in our virtual newsroom spent the next couple of hours wondrously exchanging e-mail messages – live-blogging the Rocky’s live-blogging of the sinkhole, if you will. Our thread — never before revealed — went like this:
9:27 a.m. – Everybody loves a sinkhole. But this is a bit over the top, IMHO
9:30 a.m. — This is great journalism!
