Network executives balk at DNC location change

Apparently Barack Obama’s decision to give his nomination acceptance speech at Invesco Field to include more people in the process could end up shutting Americans out.

According to an article in Politico, network executives publicly questioned their financial ability to cover the acceptance speech from Invesco, which could add hundreds of thousands if not millions of dollars in additional expenses for the already cash-strapped television stations.

Obama’s acceptance speech at Invesco will certainly be televised and covered by every major outlet, executives said, but the additional costs could mean reduced coverage of the convention in the days leading up to the final day when Obama will accept his party’s nomination.

In 2004, the networks didn’t cover some of the speeches made in the days leading up to the grand finale of candidate acceptance speeches — a reality network execs say could happen again this year.

For political junkies out there who can’t stand the thought of not having up-to-the-minute coverage of events each night at the DNC next month in Denver, have no fear. The Colorado Independent will be fully staffing the convention no matter where the Dems choose to make their speeches.
